The first thing to remember when you want to Build a Chicken House is that it does not need to be complicated. Chickens are very undemanding birds and with a few basic needs covered they will provide you with the freshest eggs imaginable.

The amount of materials you will need depends on the number of birds you are going to keep and the size you wish to build. They do not need a large amount of space as much of their time will be spent outside the actual Coop.

What you will need are materials to build the coop, a door, a few logs for them to perch on and a few containers for them to lay eggs in. You can also add feeders for water and feed. These can be bought or simply use containers you have around the house.

The simplest way is to cheat! Before you begin to construct anything make sure you look through all the local papers for people selling old sheds and small wooden structures. Free cycle is also a very good resource whatever country you are in.

An old shed is ideal for Chickens and it will save you all the work.

If you are going to build a chicken house keep it simple. You can use brick, block or wood. Just remember it does not have to be a giant structure. You can build something of only a few feet high if you wish. It could have a hinged top so you have easy access to it.

All the Chickens need is to be able to perch on something just off the ground to sleep. Don’t over complicate things. A small, low to the ground Chicken house is ideal and cheap. It could be as simple as two wooden triangle joined together by long runners and then covered in any waterproof material. Use your imagination and stick within your budget.

Block is very permanent and has the advantage that it is easy to clean. It will also last forever and is my preference. You can easily build something over a weekend. It does not have to be a work of art, just functional. A few sheets of corrugated roofing and you are basically done.

Keep it simple, don’t worry if you are not an expert, it is for function not beauty. Above all remember to try and get materials for free if possible.
